I contributed to Chemeketa’s school magazine by writing feature articles and designing a mock advertisement. This project allowed me to showcase both my writing and design skills, combining creativity with clear communication to engage the publication’s audience.
Peter Pan
As part of the design process at school, we explored public domain books, and I chose Peter Pan, a personal favorite. For the assignment, we needed to create a drop cap from a chapter starting with a specific letter, and I selected the letter “O.” In the illustration, the waves subtly spell out Hook, referencing Captain Hook. I created two drop caps for this project – the other features Peter Pan and the moon forming the shape of the “O.” I chose the Jolly Roger and Peter Pan as focal points because they are instantly recognizable and visually engaging.
I began this project by sketching the ship in pencil, then brought the sketch into Illustrator to hand-trace it and add new elements. The final illustration was placed into InDesign for layout.
I then photographed a model to use as a reference for the Peter Pan illustration, which I drew in Procreate. I then brought the illustration into Photoshop, where I used a photo of the moon I had taken as the background for the “O” shape. I created the “O” in Illustrator and brought all the elements together in InDesign for the final layout.
Tree of Life
This project was created in Illustrator, with each page drawn on multiple layers. The series tells the story of life and death as a continuous cycle: as each baby is born, a tree is planted. The tree grows alongside the child and eventually becomes their resting place at the end of life, symbolizing the ongoing cycle through future generations. I treated the page featuring the mother and child differently from the others to make it stand out, highlighting the moment when new life begins.
